Understanding wrist and thumb pain
What causes wrist and thumb pain?
The wrist and thumb are in use almost every waking minute, so it is no surprise they are prone to pain. The most common causes are a sprain after a fall, and strain or tendon irritation from repeating the same movement.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is another frequent cause. It happens when a nerve is squeezed as it passes through the wrist, causing tingling, numbness and pain in the hand and fingers.
Pain at the base of the thumb is often linked to arthritis in the joint there. Depending on the cause, a support can either steady the wrist while you keep using it, or hold it still so it can rest.
Common signs
How wrist and thumb pain can feel
The pattern of symptoms often points to the cause. These are the ones people tell us about most.
Pain when you grip or twist
Lifting a pan, wringing a cloth or pushing up from a chair hurts the wrist.
Tingling or numbness
Pins and needles in the thumb and fingers, often worse at night. This can be a sign of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Swelling and stiffness
A wrist that looks puffy or feels stiff, particularly after a fall or a busy day.
Pain at the base of the thumb
Opening jars, turning keys and pinching become painful.
How a Bauerfeind support helps
Four ways a support can help your wrist
Compression
Medical-grade knit fits closely around the wrist, helping to ease swelling and giving a reassuring sense of support.
Gentle massage
Contoured pads are designed to take pressure off the nerves and blood vessels in the wrist as you move.
Adjustable stability
A stay and strap steady the wrist, and you control how firm the support feels.
Rest and protection
Braces hold the wrist or thumb in a comfortable position while leaving your fingers free to grip.
Sprains, strain and tendon pain
ManuTrain: support that lets your wrist keep moving
A knitted wrist support with pads designed to relieve pressure on nerves and blood vessels. A stay on the palm side and an adjustable strap steady the joint, and the seamless knit between thumb and finger means you can grip without rubbing.
When the wrist needs to rest
ManuLoc: a lightweight stabilising brace
A flat, breathable brace that keeps the wrist still while leaving your fingers free to grip. It is often used for carpal tunnel syndrome, after an operation or when the wrist is irritated.
For more support along the forearm, see the ManuLoc Long.
Thumb pain
RhizoLoc OA: support for the base of the thumb
A slim thumb orthosis that holds the thumb in a relieving position while still letting you grip and get on with everyday tasks.
It is also part of our arthritis supports range.
FAQ
Common questions about wrist and thumb supports
Which wrist support is best for carpal tunnel syndrome?
A brace that keeps the wrist still in a straight, relaxed position is commonly recommended for carpal tunnel syndrome, and is often worn at night. The ManuLoc is a stabilising brace designed for this. Speak to your GP if you have tingling or numbness in your hand that is not settling.
What is the difference between a wrist support and a wrist brace?
A wrist support is a soft, knitted sleeve that gives compression and lets the wrist move, such as the ManuTrain. A wrist brace, sometimes called a splint, has stays that hold the wrist still, such as the ManuLoc and ManuLoc Long.
Can I still use my hand while wearing one?
Yes. The ManuTrain is designed for use during daily activity, and the ManuLoc braces keep the wrist still while leaving your fingers free for controlled gripping.
Which support is best for thumb arthritis?
The RhizoLoc OA is designed for arthritis at the base of the thumb. You can read more on our arthritis supports page.
When should I see a doctor about wrist pain?
See your GP if the pain has not improved after two weeks, keeps coming back, or you have tingling or numbness in your hand. Get urgent help from NHS 111, an urgent treatment centre or A&E if the pain is severe, you heard a snap or pop at the time of an injury, the wrist has changed shape, or you cannot move your wrist or hold things.
Do I need a prescription?
No. You can order directly from this site. We do recommend speaking to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant first, so the support suits you and your diagnosis.
How do I choose my size?
Each product page has a size guide showing where to measure. Check the options on each product page, as some supports come as a left or a right. If you are between sizes, contact us at service@jointoperations.co.uk and we will help.
Not sure what is causing your wrist or thumb pain, or which support is right for you? Speak to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant, who can advise on the best option.
