Understanding back pain
What causes lower back pain?
Back pain is one of the most common reasons people see their GP, and most of it is felt in the lower back, also called the lumbar spine.
Often there is no single cause. It is usually linked to strained muscles or ligaments, long spells of sitting, or lifting awkwardly. Less often it comes from a disc, or from the sacroiliac joints where the spine meets the pelvis.
Most back pain improves within a few weeks. Staying as active as you can is widely recommended, and the right support can help you feel comfortable enough to keep moving.
Common signs
How back pain can feel
Everyone's back pain is different, but these are the things people tell us about most often.
A dull ache
An ache or soreness across the lower back, often worse after a long day.
Stiffness
A back that feels stiff first thing in the morning or after sitting, easing once you get moving.
Tension and spasm
Tight, tired muscles either side of the spine that can tighten suddenly when you bend or twist.
Pain that travels
Pain that spreads into the buttock or down the leg. This can be sciatica, so speak to your GP.
How a Bauerfeind support helps
Four ways a support can help your back
Compression
Medical-grade knit wraps closely around the lower back, giving a reassuring sense of support as you move.
Gentle massage
A contoured pad with nubs sits over the lower back and gently massages the muscles with every movement.
Stabilising stays
Braces such as LumboLoc add contoured stays that support the lumbar spine and encourage an upright posture.
Confidence to move
Staying active is widely recommended for back pain, and feeling supported helps many people keep going.
Everyday lower back pain
LumboTrain: active support with a massaging pad
A breathable knitted back support with a contoured friction pad that gently massages the lower back as you move. Hand straps make it easy to put on, and the slim profile sits discreetly under clothing.
Available in a straight cut and a waisted cut.
When you need firmer support
LumboLoc: a stabilising brace for the lumbar spine
A light, elastic brace with anatomically contoured stays at the back. It supports the lumbar spine and lets you adjust the compression yourself, for lower back pain or moderate muscle weakness.
Sacroiliac joint pain
SacroLoc: targeted support for the pelvis
Designed for pain around the sacroiliac joints, where the spine meets the pelvis. Two pads sit over the joints and massage as you move, while adjustable tension straps steady the pelvis.
FAQ
Common questions about back supports
Which back support is best for lower back pain?
For everyday lower back pain and tension, the LumboTrain is the usual starting point. If you need firmer support, the LumboLoc adds stabilising stays, and the LumboLoc Forte is firmer still. If your pain is lower down, around the sacroiliac joints, the SacroLoc is designed for that area. If you are not sure, ask your GP or physiotherapist.
What is the difference between a back support and a back brace?
A back support is a soft, knitted belt that gives compression and a gentle massage, such as the LumboTrain. A back brace has firmer parts, such as stays or tension straps, and is used where the back needs more stabilising, such as the LumboLoc, LordoLoc and SacroLoc.
Will wearing a back support weaken my muscles?
It is a common worry. Our knitted supports are designed to move with you rather than hold you rigid, so your muscles keep working while you wear them. A support works best alongside staying active and any exercises your clinician recommends. Follow their advice on how long to wear it each day.
Can I wear a back support under my clothes?
Yes. Our back supports are slim, breathable and designed to be worn under clothing during daily activity. Many people take them off for long periods of sitting or at night. Follow the wearing advice in the box and your clinician's guidance.
Should I choose the straight or waisted LumboTrain?
Both give the same support. The waisted cut is shaped for a more defined waist and was designed with women in mind, while the straight cut suits a straighter torso.
When should I see a doctor about back pain?
See your GP if your back pain has not improved after a few weeks, is severe or getting worse, or stops you doing your day-to-day activities. Call 999 or go to A&E if you have back pain with numbness or tingling around your genitals or buttocks, difficulty peeing, loss of bladder or bowel control, weakness or numbness in both legs, chest pain, or if it started after a serious accident.
Do I need a prescription?
No. You can order directly from this site. We do recommend speaking to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant first, so the support suits you and your diagnosis.
How do I choose my size?
Each product page has a size guide showing where to measure. If you are between sizes, contact us at service@jointoperations.co.uk and we will help.
