Understanding arthritis
What is arthritis?
Arthritis is the name for conditions that cause pain and inflammation in a joint. It affects millions of people in the UK, and osteoarthritis is by far the most common type.
In osteoarthritis, the smooth cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones gradually becomes thinner, so the joint can become painful, stiff and sometimes swollen. It most often affects the knees, hips, hands and the base of the thumb.
There is no cure, but staying active, keeping to a healthy weight and the right support can help you manage the symptoms and carry on doing the things you enjoy.
Common signs
How arthritis can feel
Everyone's arthritis is different, but these are the things people tell us about most often.
Pain when you move
An aching joint during or after activity, such as walking, climbing stairs or gripping.
Stiffness
Joints that feel stiff first thing in the morning or after sitting for a while, easing once you get moving.
Swelling
A joint that looks puffy or feels warm, particularly after a busy day.
Feeling unstable
A knee that feels weak or as if it might give way, which can knock your confidence.
How a Bauerfeind support helps
Four ways a support can help an arthritic joint
Compression
Medical-grade knit fits closely around the joint, helping to ease swelling and giving a reassuring sense of support.
Gentle massage
Contoured silicone pads move with you, gently massaging the soft tissue around the joint as you walk.
Unloading
Unloading braces shift pressure away from the painful side of the knee, where osteoarthritis affects one side more than the other.
Confidence to move
Staying active is widely recommended for arthritis, and feeling the joint supported helps many people keep going.
Everyday knee arthritis
GenuTrain A3: comfortable all-day support
A knitted knee support with a contoured silicone pad that gives a gentle massage each time you move. Hoffa spots on the pad target a common pain point just below the kneecap, and the breathable knit is comfortable to wear through the day.
Arthritis on one side of the knee
GenuTrain OA: relief you can dial in
A lightweight, low-profile unloading brace that takes pressure off the inner (medial) or outer (lateral) side of the knee. The Boa Fit System lets you adjust the level of relief yourself while you are wearing it, with no tools needed.
Moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis
SecuTec OA: a supportive unloading orthosis
Designed for moderate to severe osteoarthritis of the knee. It relieves the painful side of the joint, and an orthotist can set the level of relief depending on whether the inner or outer side is affected. Its flat design and soft padding mean it can be worn comfortably under clothes.
Thumb arthritis
RhizoLoc OA: support for the base of the thumb
A slim thumb orthosis for osteoarthritis or arthritis at the base of the thumb. It holds the thumb in a relieving position to ease pain, while still letting you grip and get on with everyday tasks.
FAQ
Common questions about arthritis supports
Which knee support is best for arthritis?
If your pain is general and you want comfortable all-day support, the GenuTrain A3 is the usual starting point. If the osteoarthritis is on one side of the knee (your clinician may call it medial or lateral) and you need that side taken off-load, the GenuTrain OA is designed for that. For moderate to severe osteoarthritis, the SecuTec OA is fitted and adjusted by an orthotist. If you are not sure, ask your GP, physiotherapist or consultant.
What is the difference between a knee support and a knee brace?
A knee support is a soft, knitted sleeve that fits closely around the joint and gives compression, such as the GenuTrain A3. A knee brace has rigid or semi-rigid parts, such as hinges, struts or straps, and is used where the knee needs more stabilising or unloading, such as the GenuTrain OA and SecuTec OA.
What is an unloader knee brace?
An unloader brace, also called an unloading or offloading brace, is a knee brace designed to shift pressure away from one side of the knee joint. It is used for osteoarthritis that mainly affects one side of the knee, most often the inner (medial) side. The GenuTrain OA and SecuTec OA are both unloading braces.
Will a support cure my arthritis?
No. A support does not cure arthritis or reverse changes in the joint. It is designed to help you manage symptoms such as pain and instability so you can stay active, alongside the treatment and exercise your clinician recommends.
Can I wear a support all day?
Our supports are designed to be worn during daily activity and exercise. Many people take them off for long periods of sitting or at night. Follow the wearing advice in the box and your clinician's guidance.
Do I need a prescription?
No. You can order directly from this site. We do recommend speaking to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant first so the support suits your joint and your diagnosis.
How do I choose my size?
Each product page has a size guide with the measurements to take. Measure the side you will wear the support on. If you are between sizes, contact us at service@jointoperations.co.uk and we will help.
Not sure what is causing your joint pain, or which support is right for you? Speak to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant, who can advise on the best option.
