Understanding shoulder pain
What causes shoulder pain?
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body. That freedom of movement comes at a price: it relies on a group of muscles and tendons, the rotator cuff, to keep it stable.
Common causes of shoulder pain include irritated or damaged rotator cuff tendons, frozen shoulder, osteoarthritis, and injuries from a fall or sport that leave the joint feeling unstable.
Many shoulder problems improve over weeks or months, and keeping the shoulder gently moving is usually part of recovery. A support is designed to steady the joint and make movement more comfortable along the way.
Common signs
How shoulder pain can feel
Everyone's shoulder pain is different, but these are the things people tell us about most often.
Pain when you lift your arm
Reaching overhead, behind your back or out to the side brings the pain on.
Stiffness
The shoulder will not move as far as it used to, which makes dressing and reaching awkward.
Pain at night
Aching that is worse when you lie on the affected side.
Feeling weak or unstable
The arm feels weak, or the shoulder feels as if it might slip.
How a Bauerfeind support helps
Four ways a support can help your shoulder
Compression
Medical-grade knit fits closely around the shoulder and upper arm, giving a reassuring sense of support.
Gentle massage
A soft pad with massaging nubs works on the tissue around the joint each time you move your arm.
A centred joint
The strap system holds the support in place and is designed to keep the shoulder centred for better joint guidance.
Confidence to move
Movement is usually part of shoulder recovery, and feeling supported helps many people keep the arm in use.
Ongoing pain and recovery
OmoTrain: steady support for the shoulder joint
A knitted shoulder support that holds the joint in a centred position. Its strap system leaves the chest free, so breathing is not restricted, and a soft pad with massaging nubs can be added for extra relief. One support fits either shoulder.
Getting movement back
OmoTrain S: lighter support that moves with you
Designed to support the shoulder while encouraging movement. A removable Delta pad massages the soft tissue with every movement, and the direct strap system makes it quick to put on. Choose a left or right.
FAQ
Common questions about shoulder supports
Which shoulder support is right for me?
The OmoTrain is designed to hold the shoulder in a centred position and suits ongoing pain, osteoarthritis, and recovery after injury or surgery. The OmoTrain S is designed to ease pain while encouraging movement, and is quick to put on. If you are not sure, ask your GP, physiotherapist or consultant.
Will a shoulder support stop me moving my arm?
No. These are active supports that are designed to move with you, not slings or immobilisers. If your clinician has told you to keep the shoulder still, you will need a different type of product, so check with them first.
Can a shoulder support help with rotator cuff pain?
A support cannot repair a damaged tendon, but it is designed to steady the joint and make movement more comfortable while you follow the exercises and treatment your clinician recommends.
Can I wear a shoulder support under my clothes?
Yes. The knit is thin and breathable, and the supports are designed to be worn under clothing during daily activity. Follow the wearing advice in the box and your clinician's guidance.
When should I see a doctor about shoulder pain?
See your GP if the pain has not improved after two weeks, or it is getting worse. Get urgent help from NHS 111 or A&E if the pain is sudden or very bad, you cannot move your arm, the shoulder has changed shape, or you have pins and needles that do not go away.
Do I need a prescription?
No. You can order directly from this site. We do recommend speaking to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant first, so the support suits you and your diagnosis.
How do I choose my size?
Each product page has a size guide showing where to measure. The OmoTrain S comes as a left or a right. If you are between sizes, contact us at service@jointoperations.co.uk and we will help.
Not sure what is causing your shoulder pain, or which support is right for you? Speak to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant, who can advise on the best option.
