Understanding Achilles pain

What is Achilles tendon pain?

The Achilles tendon is the thick cord at the back of the ankle that joins the calf muscles to the heel bone. It takes a heavy load every time you walk, run or climb stairs.

When the tendon is overworked it can become painful, stiff and swollen. This is often called Achilles tendonitis or tendinopathy. It is common in runners and in people who have suddenly become more active, but it affects plenty of people who are not sporty too.

It usually improves with time, by easing off the activity that brought it on, and with exercises from a physiotherapist. A support is designed to ease the tendon and help you stay comfortable while it settles.

Common signs

How Achilles pain can feel

Achilles pain tends to come on gradually. These are the signs people notice most often.

Pain at the back of the heel

Pain or aching along the tendon, between the heel and the lower calf.

Morning stiffness

The tendon feels stiff with your first steps of the day and eases as it warms up.

Swelling or thickening

The tendon looks or feels thicker, and is tender to squeeze.

Pain after activity

It is worse during or after walking, running or climbing stairs.

How a Bauerfeind support helps

Four ways a support can help your Achilles

Compression

Medical-grade knit fits closely around the ankle and tendon, helping to ease swelling and giving a reassuring sense of support.

Gentle massage

A contoured pad runs along the Achilles tendon and gently massages it with every step.

A raised heel

The AchilloTrain comes with optional heel wedges for your shoes, which raise the heel slightly to take tension off the tendon.

Confidence to move

Feeling the tendon supported helps many people keep walking comfortably while it recovers.

FAQ

Common questions about Achilles supports

Which Achilles support is best for Achilles tendonitis?

For everyday Achilles pain and swelling, the AchilloTrain is the usual starting point. It has a long massage pad along the tendon and comes with heel wedges for your shoes. For running and sport, the Sports Achilles Support is lighter. If you are not sure, ask your GP or physiotherapist.

What is the difference between the AchilloTrain and the Sports Achilles Support?

The AchilloTrain is a medical support for everyday wear, with a long massage pad along the tendon and heel wedges that raise the heel. The Sports Achilles Support is a lighter, more breathable support designed for running and training.

What are the heel wedges for?

The heel wedges supplied with the AchilloTrain sit inside your shoes and raise the heel slightly, which is designed to take some tension off the Achilles tendon. They are optional, and two are included so you can use one in each shoe.

Can I run in an Achilles support?

The Sports Achilles Support is designed for sport, and the AchilloTrain can be worn during activity. If you are recovering from an Achilles problem, follow your physiotherapist's advice on when and how to return to running.

When should I get urgent help for Achilles pain?

Go to A&E or an urgent treatment centre if you feel a sudden sharp pain in the back of your heel or calf, especially with a popping or snapping sound, and then find it hard to walk or stand on tiptoe. This can be a sign of a torn tendon. See your GP if the pain is not improving after a few weeks.

Do I need a prescription?

No. You can order directly from this site. We do recommend speaking to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant first, so the support suits you and your diagnosis.

How do I choose my size?

Each product page has a size guide showing where to measure. If you are between sizes, contact us at service@jointoperations.co.uk and we will help.

Not sure what is causing your heel or calf pain, or which support is right for you? Speak to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant, who can advise on the best option.
