Understanding ankle sprains
What is an ankle sprain?
A sprain happens when the ligaments that hold a joint together are stretched or torn. In the ankle it usually happens when the foot rolls inwards, straining the ligaments on the outside of the joint.
The result is pain, swelling and often bruising. Most mild sprains settle within a couple of weeks with rest and self-care, while more serious sprains can take a good deal longer.
An ankle that has been sprained before is more likely to be sprained again, and repeated sprains can leave the joint feeling unstable. A support is designed to steady the ankle while it recovers and as you return to activity.
Common signs
How an ankle sprain can feel
Sprains vary from a mild twist to a torn ligament, but these are the most common signs.
Pain around the ankle
Pain and tenderness, usually on the outside of the ankle, that is worse when you put weight on it.
Swelling and bruising
A puffy ankle, sometimes with bruising that appears over the following day or two.
Trouble bearing weight
Walking, stairs and uneven ground feel painful or awkward.
Giving way
An ankle that feels wobbly or rolls easily, particularly after earlier sprains.
How a Bauerfeind support helps
Four ways a support can help a sprained ankle
Compression
Medical-grade knit fits closely around the ankle, helping to ease swelling and giving a reassuring sense of support.
Gentle massage
Soft contoured pads sit behind each ankle bone and gently massage the soft tissue as you walk.
Strapped stability
A figure-of-8 strap wraps around the foot and ankle like athletic taping, helping to guard against rolling.
Confidence to move
Feeling the ankle held securely helps many people get back to walking and activity.
Swelling and soreness
MalleoTrain: comfortable compression after a sprain
A knitted ankle support with no rigid parts, so it is comfortable in everyday shoes and allows a full range of movement. Two contoured pads sit behind the ankle bones and massage the area as you move, helping to ease swelling.
Mild sprains and weak ligaments
MalleoTrain S: knitted support with a stabilising strap
The comfort of a knitted support with an adjustable strap that fastens in a figure-of-8 around the foot and ankle. It is designed to steady the joint on the move and protect against the foot rolling sideways.
More serious sprains
MalleoLoc: a stabilising brace for injured ligaments
A slim stabilising brace used in the early care of more serious twisting injuries and ligament strains. It steadies the ankle and guards against it rolling sideways, while still allowing the normal heel-to-toe movement of walking.
For the next stage of recovery, or after surgery, your clinician may suggest the MalleoLoc L3, AirLoc or CaligaLoc.
FAQ
Common questions about ankle supports
Which ankle support is best for a sprained ankle?
For a mild sprain with swelling and soreness, the MalleoTrain is the usual starting point. If your ankle feels unstable or you want extra security for sport, the MalleoTrain S and MalleoTrain Plus add a figure-of-8 strap. For a more serious sprain or a ligament injury, a stabilising brace such as the MalleoLoc gives firmer protection. If you are not sure how bad the sprain is, ask your GP, physiotherapist or pharmacist.
What is the difference between an ankle support and an ankle brace?
An ankle support is a soft, knitted sleeve that gives compression, such as the MalleoTrain. An ankle brace has rigid or semi-rigid parts, such as a shell and straps, and is used where the ankle needs to be held more firmly, such as the MalleoLoc.
Can I wear an ankle support inside my shoes?
Yes. Our knitted supports are thin enough to wear in most everyday and sports shoes. The MalleoLoc is slim enough to wear in a shoe and can also be worn without one.
How long does a sprained ankle take to heal?
Most mild sprains start to feel better within about two weeks. It is usually sensible to avoid strenuous exercise such as running for up to eight weeks, and severe sprains can take several months. Your physiotherapist can advise on when to return to sport.
When should I get medical help for a sprained ankle?
Get advice from NHS 111 or an urgent treatment centre if the pain is severe, you cannot put any weight on the ankle, you heard a crack when it happened, the ankle has changed shape, or it has not started to improve after a few days of self-care. Go to A&E if the foot is numb, discoloured or cold.
Do I need a prescription?
No. You can order directly from this site. We do recommend speaking to your GP, physiotherapist or consultant first, so the support suits you and your diagnosis.
How do I choose my size?
Each product page has a size guide showing where to measure. Most ankle supports come as a left or a right, so choose the side you need. If you are between sizes, contact us at service@jointoperations.co.uk and we will help.
Not sure how serious your sprain is, or which support is right for you? Speak to your GP, physiotherapist or pharmacist, who can advise on the best option.
